My friend is planning to get a Toy breed she said that she is not going to seek trainning because training a Toy is not necessary and Toys are not trainable anyways What advice should I offer her?
She says she's heard it all Like She could should reconsider the training because Toy breeds are smart and training will make the dog a more enjoyable companion etc I am not sure what to say if anything at all|||~ Well I have 3 small breed dogs. All come, sit, stay, shake, down, out, heel, and are completely house trained 100%.
I think your friend should rethink getting a small breed if this is her outlook on them. To just let the dog behave in any manner is going to create a very bad dog and one she is not going to enjoy for long. All dogs should be and can be trained, it is the owner that is usually difficult to train!|||If she enjoys an animal that will defecate and urinate all over her house and possibly (probably) bite family members and guests then BRAVO!|||ALL puppies should go to training classes. The puppies love it and it makes for a happy dog and owner when you have a well behaved dog....no matter how intelligent the dog is!|||Sigh. All dogs need to be trained. All dogs are trainable. The only people who say toy breeds aren't trainable are the ones that want a possession, not a dog.
Your friend know nothing about dogs, and should really be rethinking this decision - or else that dog is going to be so poorly behaved that even she won't like it. And then it will probably end up in a shelter.|||All dogs are trainable, no matter what the size, not training the dog on basic commands I think would do the dog a disservice. It's like she's telling you that a toy breed dog is dumb and can't learn, so why try? That's just wrong, small dogs can be very very intelligent, they, just like any dog, just needs someone willing to take the time and train them properly. Plus training helps with their socialization and makes them no so mean or scared towards other people and dogs.|||Toy breeds need the training most of all, in my opinion. They are small, yappy, and independant--they can get out of control QUICKLY if not properly trained.
This is why most people have things against toy breeds, because too many people get them to put them in their purse, and they become menaces. They bite, yap, and dont do anything they are told. They are also hard to potty train--harder if they have no other training.
Explain all this to your friend. She's going to regret it if she doesnt train this pup.|||I think she may be taking the word "toy" too literally. I have always hated this wording anyway, as many people, like your firend, see small dogs as exactly that: toys. They are not toys. They are dogs that need training, attention, healthy care, and excercise. If your friend is too lazy to even consider training her dog, do you really think this dog will be getting the attention it needs and proper health care?? Doubtful. Tell your firend she should stick to the real toys until she is mature enough to be a responsible dog owner.|||It's necessary to train any breed of dog. Just because they are smaller and cute doesnt mean they don't need proper training. Trust me, I was ignorant with my first dog and thought she was too cute to need training. She turned out to be a hellian and would not listen to me for anything, she ended up getting hit by a car because I was too stupid to train her properly.|||You should tell her to reconsider before buying this dog if she honestly thinks that toys are untrainable. Any dog can be trained and I had a Shih Tzu and I didn't train him and he became a little home wrecker.
If she doesn't even think she can train the dog why is she getting one in the first place?|||It doesn't matter if the dog is a toy or giant breed...they still need training....|||Training a toy is not necessary? Ok, so she doesn't plan on any training, not even house training? That'll be interesting.
Any dog can be trained. Maybe she just doesn't want to do training for tricks or something which of course is the owner's choice but training in basic commands such as "sit", "stay" and other things like that I think are a necessity.
She is an idiot if she thinks toys are not trainable. She should do some more research before she gets a dog so that maybe she will have a clue.|||They are completley trainable, I believe all dogs should be trained. Tell her that toy dogs tend to bite a lot, so it needs to be bite trained. It also needs to be house broken, that is a kind of training. If you want it to listen to your commands, it isnt going to be born with that ability. I have a toy breed and she is very well behaved because I trained her from the start.
Dr. Maxwell J. Titelman|||Wow,what an idiot!
What an imagination....too many cartoons!
Thinks a magic wand makes a civilized dog?
Poor dog...whatever she gets will be RUINED %26amp; she'll blame a brainless animal. What a shame.|||Your friend is a moron. More bites happen from miserable, spoiled, untrained toy dogs than ANY of the large and supposedly "aggressive" breeds! ALL DOGS need training! All dogs CAN be trained! I have 2 toy breed dogs that are in Intermediate and Advanced obedience levels!
Tell your friend to either take PROPER care of a dog or don't get one- we have enough stupid dog owners in this world already, we don't need another one.|||well toy breeds are a little more dificult to train but difficult dose not mean you can not train them it may take longer and more hard work but it is very so possible and because toy brreds are more"high mainnence" training will definetly make the dog a better more loveable companion .. so you might just want to tell your friend that you can train them it does take longer but it will make him/her more obidient and less high maintnece such as needing attention every second and bitting /barking wehn does not get attention or when some one leaves or comes in the door these can all easily be fixed.. remember when talking to your friend to be sympathatic sho he/she does not tihnk you hate the og and you want it gone but show your friend youa re really putting their best intrest first....hopefully i helped|||ALL dogs, regardless of size, need training. Too many people think that small breeds don't need training because they can just pick the dog up if they want. That's a very bad way of thinking.
A dog that hasn't been trained is a liability for the owner. When it bites someone the owner will be held responsible and "It's just a little dog" won't cut it - especially if they end up in court.
A well trained dog is a happy dog and a good canine citizen. A toy dog that isn't trained gives all dogs and owners a bad reputation.
Toy dogs are very smart and do very well with training. You don't see a whole lot of St. Bernards in the circus, it's usually the smaller dogs like poodles and terriers that do the performing. There are even agility competitions strictly for toy dogs using smaller equipment.
Please, please, please tell your friend that she is doing dogs and owners everywhere a great disservice by not training her dog.|||Yes, toys need trained! All dogs need to be trained, regardless of size.
They aren't trainable? False. I currently have a papillon and previously had a toy poodle. Both very intelligent. Both trained. My papillon does agility and knows a wide variety of tricks. The toy poodle I used to have was my 4-H dog as a youth and did agility, showmanship, and obedience.
Perhaps you can show her some videos of trained toy breeds so she knows it *is* possible. Here's a couple that I found on YouTube:

.|||yes she should. a dog is a dog. just because its a small dog doesn't mean its a little furry human. you should train a dog regardless of its size, breed, or anything else. saying a Toy type dog isn't trainable/doesn't need training is not correct. all dogs are trainable %26amp; its the owners responsibility to train them.%26amp; just because they are small doesn't mean they are not still dogs. they are animals: then dogs: then breed: then name. just because a dog is "cute" doesn't mean you (her or any dog owner) should excuse bad behavior. if you do you will end up with a brat dog who thinks it is the boss. and that is not good %26amp; WILL cause lots of problems if your friend isn't the "alpha dog". that doesn't mean being mean to it just means setting up some rules for it %26amp; not let it dis-obey them just because its "cute".|||Definitely train all dogs.
We're in the midst of training our 4 month mini Havanese- she's 3 lbs now and shouldn't be more than 6 lbs. She's extremely smart. After 3 weeks w/ her, she's completely paper trained, knows how to fetch, and knows "no", "off", "sit", "lay down" and still teaching her more-
The first couple weeks, she would rip up her pad and play w/ it. And we could tell when we'd come home to a mess, she didn't like sitting in her own ruins either. I think dogs are in a much better/healthier state of mind w/ proper training.
Show your friend our website. If she/he doesn't train the dog, the house/apt will look like this all the time:
http://thepuppyexperiment.wordpress.com/|||Yes toys should still be bred.. and toys ARE trainable! I know many that have their CGC, and some that perform at agility and obedience trials.
They are actually very smart little dogs.. many toys have been used to perform circus tricks.
It is important to train toys too.. it makes for a more enjoyable and confidant dog.
So many toys are not trained and this is why people associate toy breeds as being yappy, nippy, nervous, antisocial little dogs.
I have a toy breed.. although I did not do obedience with him.. I do not tolerate obnoxious or destructive behavours from him. He is a very good little dog and I enjoy his company. I take him with me to family reunions and such, and people look forward to seeing him there.
