My MALE dog has become very attached to a toy pig with a squeaker inside. What should I do?

He whimpers for hours if we take the toy away, he has become very protective over it and if he drops it from the bed he will yelp until someone picks it up and returns it to him.

Any advice? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

He's a 2 year old labradoodle.|||you take it away and give it back in six months ... if the same obsession, throw it out ... obsessive behaviour should not be allowed ... and whimpers for hours, how annoying is that, i would have thrown the toy out long ago ... the longer you let the dog be obsessive, you could have an obsessive dog for life ... how on earth could it be a good thing ??? just the fact you say that, take the toy away now and put it in the garbage and pretend it never existed ... and if your dog whimpers for hours it is unbalanced, neurotic and untrained, work on that and don't concern yourself with a squeaky toy ...|||Being protective over a toy and not letting you take it is a VERY bad thing and will only lead to bigger and badder problems. You need to enroll in obedience classes asap and make sure he understands who is in control and the boss. Being a brat over the toy isn't a bad thing, but being overly protective is! Neutering will be a major benefit. If you want him to stop obsessing about the toy when he doesn't have it do things to distract him. Teach him tricks, play games, give him a bone or something else to play with.|||Quit catering to the dog. If he drops something make him get off the bed and pick it up.

He sounds obsessive. I would probably get rid of the toy for good.|||So the dog has a favorite toy. What is wrong with that? My dog has a ball that he just loves. We all have our treasures. and that toy is his.|||Why is it a bad thing? Its better than having him chew on your furniture. Just let him enjoy his toy. Its definitely not a bad thing.|||Find a Preacher quick.|||No problem, let him have it.|||try to bring other toys in and play with him with other toys|||Let him have the toy....and introduce others as well.
