How do I clean the battery compartment of a toy left w/batteries over the winter that has completely corroded?

I left my son's battery-powered bubble blower in the garage over the winter. I took it out today and the battery compartment has completely corroded. To make matters worse, I washed it in water. I tried to clean some of the corrosion and dried off the toy and put new batteries in it, but it didn't work....any thoughts, suggestions, ideas?|||if it hasn't started to rust try removing the contact points and using a fine sandpaper , clean it off.

you have to remove all the corrosive residue otherwise it will start to corrode to the point where the steel contact points will corrode away.|||a q-tip and nail polish remover.|||I wouldn't. Simply throw it away. It is too high risk of transferring battery acid to your child.|||coke pour a little on and it eats battery acid off this works with car batterys also|||clean with a paste of baking soda and water on an old toothbrush. -Don鈥檛 run the batteries till they're dead or fully discharge the batteries
