How to teach a Toy Chihuahua to go Potty Outside?

(before everyone starts yelling at me-this is not an opinion on if toy chihuahuas are a true breed-this has nothing to do with what I am asking. Please stick to the question at hand. Thank you!)

She is 1 year old but very tiny. She has been trained on pee pads but I want to install a doggie door so she can go in and out into the backyard to go potty. We have a very small backyard so she shouldn't be scared but she is. I have been trying to move her pee pads further and further away from the old spot inside the house and keep moving it towards the sliding glass door. Any other suggestions? Please don't say trainer or petsmart class because I can not afford it right now. Thank you for everyones respect in their answers before hand.|||Keep doing what you are doing but you may speed up the pace.

The size of the yard should not effect the dog, but if you are conserned she will sense that and act according to her temperment.|||I had the same problem and it got fixed. Solution: Praise PRAISE PRAISE!!!. Buy little swearters for him %26amp; go outside with him. Use key words like Go Pee-Pee. Once he goes, reward him (tiny treat) tell him he's such a good boy, pick him up, and go inside right away. Good luck!

|||It is going to be a challenge since she wasn't trained to go outside to begin with. I think you will just have to be persistant. Every few hours, take her outside (take the pad too if that would help) and see if that will kick in a routine for her.

And as much as you may not like it, you can start scolding her if she pees inside the house by yelling "no" and taking her outside. My stepmom goes a bit farther and puts the dog's nose up to the puddle and then pops him and says no, then takes him outside. They are pretty good about going outside now.|||you are on the right track with moving the pad closer to the door. keep it up. eventually moving it out side. Also try taking her outside to play more often to get her used to being out there. Also get some "Special" treats just for going "Potty" outside. Rewards work better than punishment. So stay away from the nose rubbing in the potty in the house. A firm no is OK but no physical form of punishment. They want to make you happy so she will learn from praise and treats. Good Luck and have patients|||First off, training classes are more geared towards basic obedience, not potty training. They can help, but not by much.

Chihuahuas are notoriously hard to potty train. You are doing the right thing by moving the pee-pads closer to the door, though.

However, you shoudn't just expect her to go outside the first time herself. That's where YOU have to take the initiative. Keep the pee-pads down ONLY as an emergency backup. Make sure you take her out frequently, every 1 to 1 1/2 hours (take her water up about 1 hour before bedtime, so you don't have to get up often during the night).

Remember that even though you think she shouldn't be scared of your back yard, she may have an entirely different perspective of it. As a toy chi (or chihuahua in general!), she's the smallest breed in the world, and tiny animals get scared quicker that larger ones. If she does act scared, don't coddle her, don't pick her up. Just talk to her in a soothing voice and let her know that everything's ok. Picking a scared dog up and trying to comfort her in reality only reinforces her fear.

When you do install the doggy door, that's going to take some training as well. She won't just go through the door. The first few times, until she understands it, you'll probably have to physically push her through the door. after a few days of this, though, she should understand it. Keep in mind though, that some dogs are never able to be properly trained for a doggy door.

Also, a word to the wise here, but try to get a model of doggy door with some kind of mechenism to keep out unwanted visitors, such as raccoons and skunks. They're a little more expensive, but worth it, when you think about that investment compared to the service fees animal control charges for pest removals from your home, and any medical or vet bills such visitors can cause for you and your pets. There is one model (which my parents have for their poodle and cockapoo) which has a sensor you put on the dog's collar, which controls a magnet in the bottom of the door, which keep it locked unless it's your dog going through. They bought it at Petco, but I don't remember the brand name. And make sure you get a door of appropriate size for you dog, plus any growth you think she may or may not have down the line.

All in all, the key is to be patient. Just like human children, some dogs take longer to train than others. Just make sure you take her outside often, and praise her when she goes outside.

I hope this helps you out!|||I would say to try and keep track of how many times and at what times your dog goes to the washroom and once u have done that then you start taking your dog outside about 15 to 20 before each time and stay out there for a while and just don't give up because it probably won't happen right away but it will just like a child keep doing it and have a treat handy for when your dog finally goes. You can always use it's favourite treat as bate to get it outside and kinda keep it's mind a bit occupied but really praise it when it finally goes and after a few times you start going out and then just u go back inside the house and leave it outside for a few minutes on it's own to get it used to being out there on it's own.And I really couldn't resist saying this cuz well for 1 you brought up how the breed of your dog n u r right ,it's not a breed at all and if u didn't advertise your made up name there people would say nothing about it.Your must be tiny cuz chiwas r small to begin with n if your calling it a toy chiwa that usually means the smallest in other words if it's not a toy poodle and your dog is smaller then the rest it's not called a toy ... it's called a runt. But hey I did answer your question first lol.Have a great x-mas and Happy Holidays.Bye 4 now.oh ya good luck on the training and just don't give up cuz it might take a little longer then u think cuz it's used to being inside and might b stubborn.
