How much exercise should a 8 year old toy poodle get each day?

I have recently adopted an 8-10 year old toy poodle who was a stray. At the moment I am taking him for two 10 minute walks per day and sometimes he has a little run around the garden. I was just wondering what is the recommended amount of walks a toy poodle should be having each day?

Poor dog. Did the adoption centre not give you some guidelines. Whilst in rescue kennels his exercise may have been limited but ten minutes twice a day is not enough, esp if he is on the lead all the time and not getting a free run in that time.



The minimum he needs is twenty minutes twice a day or one single long walk of about an hour.

If he is running around the garden when let out into it he is indicating that his energy levels are not being met.

Your garden should be totally dog proof do that he can wander in and out as well.



He is a slightly older dog but given that he could live another seven years + he needs more now and as time goes on he will indicate to you when he has had enough and it is time to slow it down.



And also look at it as being a good time for you to have some exercise as well. Good thinking time as well. However, start by having him in for a thorough health check, heart, lungs etc. to see how fit he is. If he's overweight this will affect the amount /length of exercise he has immediately. And it does depend on what he's used to as well in terms of how long you have him out for to begin with. You don't want to walk the legs off him if his muscle tone is poor at the moment, and he will need building up gradually.



Each dog is different, so it's difficult to be specific for a Toy Poodle. What might be fine for one, could overtax another to the point of exhaustion.
i used to take my toy poodle out for about half an hour a day and lots of playing in the garden used to tire him out.

He should get one good long walk a day, then maybe a shorter one and a sniff around the garden as well.
